Tuesday was our funny test day... They asked the stupidest questions!!! Suba and I were laughing like mad... They asked if - when a coconut falls - it suspends in mid-air and goes in a circle. Oh, and there was this other question in our science paper... Which of the following is an animal? A. ant B. a sorta... flower... i think... C. an IRON. Yes. An iron. I swear, if that thing actually MOVED by itself, I wouldn't need to iron my uniform... D. person playing guitar The answer was A (ant) but an ant is classified as an insect. I did some research... Ant : Any of various social insects of the family Formicidae, characteristically having wings only in the males and fertile females and living in colonies that have a complex social organization. It's an insect, with reference to '...various social insects of the family Formicidae...'. Let's look for the definition of insect now, shall we? Insect : 1 a.) Any of numerous usually small arthropod animals of the class Insecta, having an adult stage characterized by three pairs of legs and a body segmented into head, thorax, and abdomen and usually having two pairs of wings. Insects include the flies, crickets, mosquitoes, beetles, butterflies, and bees. b.) Any of various similar arthropod animals, such as spiders, centipedes, or ticks 2 An insignificant or contemptible person. If this was a question about which of the following was an insect, the guy playing guitar would have been a possible candidate. That being said, it would not be wrong if the person chose D (guy playing guitar) for he may have been an insignificant person. But there was nothing in the picture that showed he was insignificant. Anyway, that was not what our question asked... Animal : 1 A multicellular organism of the kingdom Animalia, differing from plants in certain typical characteristics such as capacity for locomotion, nonphotosynthetic metabolism, pronounced response to stimuli, restricted growth, and fixed bodily structure. 2 An animal organism other than a human, especially a mammal. 3 A person who behaves in a bestial or brutish manner. 4 A human considered with respect to his or her physical, as opposed to spiritual, nature. 5 A person having a specified aptitude or set of interests Now, this has already clashed with our answer. According to the definition I received, one of the meanings of 'animal' is '.... and fixed bodily structure.'(no.1) But an insect is '...characterized by three pairs of legs and a body segmented into head, thorax, and abdomen...'.(no. 1A) That has already gone against the meaning of animal. The meaning of an ant also states that it is an insect, not an animal. And it cannot be both, for reasons that have been stated above. It is plausible for it to be the D answer as well. For the man playing the guitar might be one out of the three meanings that have been stated under 'animal'. But I got the question right, so I'm not complaining. =D I just wanted to research on it... Coz there were some of my friends who chose D. I don't think anyone chose C (the iron)... haiz... I should research on that too someday... -Anis |
