GOOD NEWS PEOPLE!!! For those of you who have read the Star... you might have seen that lil column that says... "Readers prefer learning Science, Maths in English" YES!!!! But then again... the Star IS an English newspaper, so the response isn't very accurate. But who cares?!?!?! Most said YES!!! That they prefer learning it in ENGLISH!!!! For those of you who are too lazy too look it up... here's the article Readers prefer learning Science, Maths in English PETALING JAYA: Learning Mathematics and Science in English will help students who want to further their studies in related fields, say The Star readers in a poll by StarEducation. Student Saw May Chen from Kuala Lumpur said if students were taught in Bahasa Malaysia, they would be at a disadvantage when furthering their studies overseas. “Teaching Maths and Science in English will prepare students who want to further their studies in related fields. I wish I had a chance to study these two subjects in English. I have a younger sister and I hope she will benefit from this.” Engineer Mohd Reza Mahmood, also from the Klang Valley, said he found it easier in university after learning basic Maths and Science in English. “These subjects must be thought in English because most reference books and references on the Internet are in English.” Kheng from Sitiawan, Perak, however, said, “The main problem is that there are two generations in our country who are not proficient in English – the present generation of teachers teaching the two subjects and the students who are learning from them.” The switch to using English to teach the two subjects began in all schools from primary one to three in 2003, mainly to improve students’ competency in English and give them a competitive edge in the world. Recently, however, there have been calls to revert to the previous policy of teaching the two subjects in Bahasa Malaysia or pupils’ mother tongue, in primary schools. The Government’s current stand is to review the language policy in 2008 when the first batch of pupils that underwent the language switch complete their primary schooling. The debate continues, however, and StarEducation seeks readers’ views on the issue with its online poll.
